The 48-hour pre-flight checklist

The stuff future-you will thank past-you for. Done in one sitting, with a coffee.

Most travel disasters aren't dramatic. They're a dead phone at immigration, a card declined at the ATM, a hostel that needs a printed booking. All preventable in the 48 hours before you fly.

T-48h

  1. 01Buy your eSIM now, not at the airport. Klook is consistently 30–50% cheaper than the kiosks. Activate it on landing, not before.
  2. 02Download offline Google Maps for the city + a 50km radius. Add your hotel as a starred pin.
  3. 03Photograph your passport (photo page + visa). Email it to yourself. Add to your phone's wallet.
  4. 04Check your travel insurance is active. Screenshot the policy number and 24h hotline.

T-24h

  1. 01Online check-in opens. Do it. Pick your seat. Window for sleeping, aisle for hydrating.
  2. 02Pull USD 50–100 cash as a backup. Singapore Money Changers in Arcade or Lucky Plaza beat the bank rate every time.
  3. 03Notify your bank you're travelling, even for SE Asia. Some still flag it.
  4. 04Charge: phone, AirPods, Kindle, power bank. Leave them on the charger overnight.

T-3h (the airport)

  1. 01Refill water bottle past security. Tap is fine at Changi.
  2. 02One last bathroom before boarding — long-haul queues are brutal.
  3. 03Set phone to airplane mode + flight tracker open. Sleep on take-off, not after.
