Maldives

"SGD 80 to SGD 3,000 a night. Both work — the trick is knowing which one you want."

Should you actually go?

Yes — but choose your tier first. A local-island guesthouse on Maafushi for SGD 85 a night gets you the same turquoise water and a house reef you'll have to yourself at 6 AM. A resort overwater villa is a different holiday entirely. Don't try to do both in one trip.

November to April is dry season and worth the premium. May to October is wetter but resorts drop 30–40% and the diving is still excellent. Avoid the last two weeks of December unless you booked a year ago.

03

The experience

Understand the transfer logistics before you book anything. Seaplane resorts only operate in daylight — a late-arriving Changi flight means a forced overnight in Malé. Speedboat resorts are cheaper, faster and don't care what time you land. The Maldives is one of the top five dive destinations on earth; you don't need to be certified to use it, but if you are, this is your trip.

Sandbank picnic + uninhabited island day trip

The cliché photo and worth it once. Book through your guesthouse instead if you're staying on a local island — the local price is half.

Where to stay

Budget

Arena Beach Hotel, Maafushi

~SGD 95 / ~USD 70 per night

The local-island standard. House reef with rays, turtles and reef sharks, bikini beach 5 minutes' walk, breakfast included and dive shop on site. 30-minute speedboat from MLE.

Mid

Kandima Maldives, Dhaalu Atoll

~SGD 540 / ~USD 400 per night

Overwater bungalows with glass floors at a price that doesn't require a remortgage. Long lagoon, six restaurants, decent house reef. Book direct flights to Dhaalu rather than seaplane.

Splurge

Soneva Fushi, Baa Atoll

~SGD 2100 / ~USD 1550 per night

The benchmark. UNESCO Biosphere snorkelling, treehouse dining, an open-air cinema in the jungle, and the only resort where bicycles outnumber bookings. Save up, go once, do it for a week.

Logistics from SEA

Visa
30-day visa on arrival for most passports including Singapore. You need an onward ticket and proof of accommodation — both checked at the desk.
Flights from SEA
Singapore Airlines flies SIN → MLE direct in 4h 30m. Scoot operates the budget route — fares from SGD 380 return if you book 8 weeks out.
eSIM (Klook)
Dhiraagu eSIM via Klook for SGD 18 covers a week. Coverage is strong on inhabited islands and resort jetties; useless mid-Atoll which is the entire point. Get the eSIM →
Money
USD is accepted everywhere; MVR (Maldivian Rufiyaa) only useful on local islands for small purchases. Resorts run a tab — settle in USD on departure. No tipping culture but USD 10–20 to the housekeeping team is appreciated.

The honest verdict

Worth it

  • House reef snorkel at sunrise from any local-island guesthouse
  • One Soneva-tier night if your budget can take it — go once, properly
  • Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll) for manta aggregations June–November

Overrated

  • Dolphin cruises — they're fine; you've seen dolphins
  • Underwater restaurants — the food is mid, the gimmick is SGD 400
  • Day-trip to Malé city — there's nothing for tourists there

"Pick your tier and commit. A week on a local island with daily snorkelling is one of the best-value trips on this list. A week at Soneva Fushi is one of the best holidays on the planet. Don't try to do both."
