Tokyo doesn't introduce itself.

Should you actually go?
Yes. Even if you've been. Tokyo doesn't reveal itself — you have to walk the same neighbourhood twice, once at noon and once at 11pm, before it makes sense.
Don't try to ‘see Tokyo’ in 4 days. Pick three neighbourhoods (mine: Shimokitazawa, Yanaka, Daikanyama) and live in them. The famous bits — Shibuya crossing, Senso-ji — give them an hour each, no more.

The experience
Get up early. Tsukiji outer market by 7am, tamagoyaki on a stick from the egg stall, then walk to Hamarikyu Gardens before the salarymen arrive. Lunch in a basement counter in Yurakucho — six seats, no English menu, point at the daily special. Evening: a kissaten in Jimbocho, a single highball, then a 9pm slot at a 6-seat sushi counter you booked 3 weeks ago.

TeamLab Planets — boat ride floor
Yes it's the Instagram one. Yes it's still worth it. Book the 9am slot — empty rooms.

Mt Fuji + Hakone day trip from Tokyo
Long day, but Lake Kawaguchiko on a clear morning is worth the 6am start. Check the Fuji webcam the night before.

Shinjuku golden gai bar crawl
The cover charges trip up first-timers. Going with a guide gets you into the locals-only bars without the awkward dance.

Budget
Nui. Hostel & Bar Lounge, Kuramae
~SGD 55 / ~USD 40 per night
Old toy factory, oak-and-concrete bar downstairs that locals actually drink at. Private rooms exist and they're tiny but quiet.
Check rates on ExpediaMid
Trunk Hotel, Shibuya
~SGD 380 / ~USD 280 per night
Walkable Cat Street, the lobby bar is where Tokyo's design crowd actually hangs. Skip the ‘suite’ — standard rooms are fine.
Check rates on ExpediaSplurge
Aman Tokyo, Otemachi
~SGD 2200 / ~USD 1620 per night
33rd-floor onsen looking at the Imperial Palace. The lobby alone justifies a drink visit. Stay if you can — at minimum, book afternoon tea.

- Flights from SEA
- Haneda (HND) is closer than Narita — pay the SGD 60 extra. From SIN: 7h direct on SIA / Scoot / ANA. From BKK: 6h. Red-eye out, morning arrival is the move.
- eSIM (Klook)
- Japan eSIM 8-day unlimited via Klook for SGD 18. Connects on the runway. Don't bother with pocket WiFi anymore. Get the eSIM →
- Money
- JPY. Japan still loves cash — carry ¥10,000 minimum. 7-Eleven ATMs take foreign cards 24/7. Suica IC card on Apple Wallet for trains and konbini.

The honest verdict
Worth it
- Booking one nice sushi counter 3 weeks out (Sushi Iwa, Sushi Yoshitake)
- A full day in Yanaka — old Tokyo, no high-rises
- Last train ramen in Shinjuku at 1am
Overrated
- Robot Restaurant successors — tourist tax
- Shibuya Sky if it's cloudy — check the webcam first
- Themed cafes (cat, owl, hedgehog) — ethically grim, often
"Tokyo is the only city I've been to where doing less reveals more. Pick three neighbourhoods, walk them slowly, eat where the queue is locals."
