Should you actually go?

Yes — but manage your cost expectations. Sit-down lunch for two in the CBD is SGD 40–60, mid-range hotels are SGD 200–350/night. The AUD has been strong for years and isn't easing.

What you get in exchange: world-class natural beauty, an extraordinary food scene (the suburbs produce some of the best Asian food outside Asia), and infrastructure that makes the trip relaxing. A week with one Blue Mountains day is the minimum.

03

The experience

Cover the icons in two days — Opera House at dusk, the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk in the morning, the public ferry to Manly (SGD 5, one of the world's great short ferry trips). Then start exploring the suburbs: Surry Hills for breakfast, Marrickville for Vietnamese, Cabramatta for the best pho outside Saigon. The Blue Mountains is non-negotiable as a day trip.

BridgeClimb Sydney — twilight

Sounds gimmicky until you do it. Twilight slot is worth the premium — you summit in daylight and watch the city lights come on.

Blue Mountains + Scenic World day trip

Echo Point, the Three Sisters, the Scenic Railway down into the rainforest. The DIY train option is cheaper but you'll lose half a day to logistics.

Bondi Beach surf lesson

2-hour beginner session. Most first-timers stand up. A genuinely great morning even if the wave count is modest.

Budget

QT Bondi (entry-level studios)

~SGD 175 / ~USD 130 per night

Bondi without the dorm-room compromise. Walk to the beach in 4 minutes, the Bondi-Coogee trail starts at the corner, and there's a proper espresso machine in the room.

Mid

Ovolo Woolloomooloo

~SGD 290 / ~USD 215 per night

Converted heritage wharf on the harbour, walking distance to the Botanic Gardens and Opera House. Free minibar, free breakfast, free everything — the only Sydney mid-range that genuinely punches above its price.

Splurge

Park Hyatt Sydney

~SGD 1350 / ~USD 1000 per night

Opera House from the bath. The location at Campbells Cove is unmatched in the city — every other 'harbour view' hotel is looking at the back of something. Worth two nights as a treat.

Logistics from SEA

Visa
Singapore passport: ETA online (AUD 20), approved in minutes, valid 12 months for 90-day stays. Apply through the official Australian government site, not a third-party.
Flights from SEA
Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Scoot all fly direct in ~8h. Scoot from SGD 480 return if you book 10+ weeks out; SIA full-service from SGD 950. Avoid school-holiday windows.
eSIM (Klook)
Klook's Australia eSIM is SGD 22 for 8 days. Telstra coverage extends well into the Blue Mountains; Optus is cheaper and works fine in Sydney metro. Get the eSIM →
Money
AUD. Tap-to-pay everywhere — cash is essentially obsolete. Wise card avoids the AUD 5 ATM fees. Tipping is not customary; round up only if service was excellent.

The honest verdict

Worth it

  • Bondi to Coogee coastal walk in the morning, finish with Bronte coffee
  • Public ferry Circular Quay → Manly — best SGD 5 you'll spend in Sydney
  • Blue Mountains day trip with a stop at Leura village

Overrated

  • Sydney Tower Eye — the harbour is the view, not the inland
  • Darling Harbour as a dining district — built for tourists, priced for tourists
  • Opera House interior tours unless you're an architecture nerd — exterior is the experience

"Seven days minimum. Two for the icons, one for the Blue Mountains, four for the suburbs. Sydney is the long-haul Singaporeans keep deferring — book the flight and stop deferring."
